We use a basic system for rating trails, below is how we define our ratings.
Easy
County dirt roads mixed with loose rock, dirt with high drop-offs. High clearance 2WD and 4WD use in adverse conditions expect erosion, washes, gulches, and rock steps. 4WD is recommended with good ground clearance and driving skills.
Intermediate
Road surfaces are rutted and rocky with crock steps. Water not exceeding 12" with some mud possible. Good vehicle approach and departure angles are helpful. Tall tires (33" plus) and traction aid devices (lockers, limited slips, A-TRAC) are recommended, but not necessary. Enhanced suspension travel and ground clearance are helpful. Above average driving skills are desirable.
Difficult
The trail consists of rock, mud and considerable steps exceeding 30". Steep inclines and declines are prevalent. Enhanced off-road equipment is preferred, tall tires (33"+ recommended), maximized vehicle ground clearance and suspension travel. A winch is advisable. Vehicle mechanical or body damage is possible. Rear or Front locker recommended.
